Goal-based curriculum

What we teach, and how you track it

4.9 on Google · 56 reviews · Max 2 per instructor

Every swimmer gets a custom plan built around one goal. We teach it one skill at a time, grade every lesson, and you can see it all in your portal.

How we teach

From your goal to swimming on their own

  1. 1

    We learn your goal

At the first lesson we ask what you want for yourself or your child. Most families want a confident swimmer who can swim on their own.

  2. 2

We pick the swims that reach it

Our curriculum has 5 swims: front crawl (freestyle), backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly and treading water. We assign the ones that match your goal.

  3. 3

We teach each skill on its own

Every swim is broken into the skills it needs. Your instructor teaches one skill until it is solid, then the next, until your swimmer can do the whole swim on their own.

  4. 4

    Then the next swim

When one swim is done, we move on to the next assigned swim and its skills, until the goal is reached.

What most swimmers are assigned

  • Toddlers and kids: usually front crawl and treading water.
  • Adults: usually front crawl and treading water, or breaststroke and treading water.

Why it’s faster: Every lesson stays on your goal, and every skill builds on the last. That is how our students learn up to 3x faster than at other swim schools and community centre programs.

What we teach

5 swims, each broken into skills

We only teach the swims your goal needs, one at a time.

  • Front crawl (freestyle)
  • Backstroke
  • Breaststroke
  • Butterfly
  • Treading water

Example: the skills in front crawl

Taught in this order, each split into small steps your instructor grades. Together they build up to swimming front crawl on your own.

  1. Bobs: breathing out under water, then up for air
  2. Front float
  3. Front kicks
  4. Front crawl arms
  5. Side breathing

How we track progress

Graded every lesson

Every lesson, your instructor grades the skills your swimmer is working on for their current swim. When every part of a skill is graded Independently, the skill is done and your swimmer moves straight on to the next one. You get a text and an email each time a skill is achieved.

  1. Assisted / manuallyThe instructor guides the movement hands-on.
  2. AssistedDoes it with the instructor’s support.
  3. Independently / assistedMostly on their own, with a little help.
  4. IndependentlyDoes it on their own. Skill done.

How you see it

Your portal, Progress page

  1. Sign in to your portal.
  2. Open Progress.
  3. Choose your swimmer.

You’ll see their assigned swims, the swim they’re on now, the skill they’re working on and how each part of it is going, plus recent notes from the instructor.

Not sure about a skill? On the Progress page, tap “Ask to work on this again” on that skill and add a note if you like. The skill goes back to “working on it” and your instructor sees your note before the next lesson.

Curriculum FAQ

What will my child learn?

Toddlers and kids: usually front crawl and treading water. Adults: usually front crawl and treading water, or breaststroke and treading water. Each swim is taught one skill at a time until your swimmer can do it on their own.

How do you track progress?

Every lesson, your instructor grades the skills your swimmer is working on for their current swim. When every part of a skill is graded Independently, the skill is done and your swimmer moves straight on to the next one. You get a text and an email each time a skill is achieved. Sign in to your portal, open Progress, and choose your swimmer. You’ll see their assigned swims, the swim they’re on now, the skill they’re working on and how each part of it is going, plus recent notes from the instructor.

What if I’m not sure my child has a skill yet?

Not sure about a skill? On the Progress page, tap “Ask to work on this again” on that skill and add a note if you like. The skill goes back to “working on it” and your instructor sees your note before the next lesson.

Is the plan the same for every swimmer?

No. The swims, and the order we teach them in, come from each swimmer’s own goal and starting level, set at the first lesson.
